(Watch this space for more on travel and Italy-related apps - I'm testing a bunch of them out now.)

As a sign that my priorities are clearly in line, my very first app download was one related to wine. I downloaded the Nat Decants Food + Drink Matcher designed by wine expert Natalie Maclean.

Boy did I pick a useful tool as my first iPhone app. When you install an app, you want it to be something that is especially useful when you are away from home and on the go. This app offering a staggering 380,000 food and drink (that's right it pairs more than just wine) pairings. It is perfect to use when you are at the store shopping for wine for dinner or at a restaurant deciding what to eat and drink.

The level of detail is just awesome. When I wanted to select a wine to drink with pizza, I was given 27 choices of pizza from Chicago-style to pesto pizza. Maclean recommends aglianico, chianti, sangiovese or valpolicella wines for Chicago-style pizza and for pesto pizza her selections include ale beer and pinot grigio, primitivo and sauvignon blanc wines.

Here's a great summary of the inner workings and offerings of the Nat Decants Food + Wine Matcher:

Start with either a drink or a dish
Choose Bubbly, White, Red, Rosé, Dessert
Pair beer, spirits, cocktails, liquor, coffee, tea
Select from 292 grapes, wines and blends
219 cheeses and cheese dishes
61 pasta dishes, 118 vegetarian & salads
57 chicken, 59 beef, 41 pork, 112 seafood
27 types of pizza plus other take-out favorites
48 herbs, spices and sauces
94 Asian, Indian and Chinese dishes
123 types of chocolate and desserts
More than 380,000 pairings, with new ones added daily

You can use a free online version of the matcher at http://www.nataliemaclean.com/ or the iPhone and Blackberry apps are $2.99 to download - and well worth-it since this is the kind of info. you want when you're out dining and traveling.

Kathy McCabe, DreamofItaly.comnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22237775.post-9142161415776237362009-06-29T12:17:00.002-04:002009-06-29T12:23:52.819-04:00Save 10% on Mozzarella Excursion with Ciao Laura<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352786052634094786" style="FLOAT: right; Each week-long programs incorporate Leonardo DaVinci's teachings, especially sfumato, an open mind and playfulness allowing for creative expression. The activites on a DaVinci Caper - cooking, creative writing, sculpting, language lessons and more - are famous for incorporating sensazione (feeling), dimostrazione (demonstration) and curiosita (curiosity). Yet not everyone can take a week or so to explore their inner Leonardo.

Fortunately, Barbara has developed mini-versions of Da Vinci Capers -- Day Capers, launching this summer in Florence. She's tapped her impressive collection of scholars, artists and maestros to provide unique half-day and day-long experiences in the city of art. Walk in the footsteps of Da Vinci with a tour of the Uffizi and exploration of his Florentine haunts accompanied by a Da Vinci scholar. Take a private painting and drawing workshop (complete with a live model) in the great Vasari's former palazzo. Hit the streets of Florence with a professional photographer who will teach you how to get the best shots before reviewing your work at a digital lab. Like most things in Italy it is a gradual build-up. But when it hits it is as fierce as they come. Perched high atop a Tuscan hill the view from where I sit is exceptional. The valley seems to have been decorated by a master artisan. The clouds slowly roll in to cover everything in a cool mist. The wise olive trees are perfectly placed, while the sad bending and weaving Cypress trees hold their own against the wind.

Eight kilometers, 20 minutes by cab, one hour by bus if you catch both on time, and about 10 degrees cooler Villamagna seems trapped in history. The locals speak very little to no English (which I love). There is one little café, one little restaurant, and small bar. Nothing seems to have changed here in decades. Walking into the café you hear the record skip while being greeted with a very warm buon giorno.

Villamagna is just outside Bagno a Ripoli which is just outside of Florence, but the worlds are so different. The locals have lived here for generations. The little house I’ve rented has been in the owner’s family for three generations. That is a foreign concept to most Americans.

It takes some time to beat the American out of me. Waiting for the bus is a little like therapy. I walk far too fast for my own good in a hurry to get nowhere. I barely enjoy my dinner before I’m asking for the check. But gradually, surely, the American in me seeps out like the comfortable feeling you get when you secretly loosen your belt after a three-course Tuscan meal. It is quite good for the soul to let life pass you by while enjoying it. I’ve come to learn as I do every year that Italy really is a lifestyle and not a destination.

There are few things as good as Fagioli Uccelletto, the Bargello, or the smell of Villamagna after the rain. I wonder how many times the serpents tail would encircle me to deliver my fate in Dante’s hell? I’m guessing four times around due to my avarice nature. I seem to squander things away with no thought of tomorrow. I hope my search within my soul that began so many years ago leads me to Beatrice and inner peace. If it doesn’t I can say that I truly gave it everything and I’m ok with that.

Kathy McCabe, DreamofItaly.comnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22237775.post-60801300073258764012009-06-08T22:10:00.008-04:002009-06-09T23:24:54.342-04:00Italy Travel Deals of the WeekThere’s still time to scheme up a summertime getaway to Italy. The space was bought by renowned French art collector Francois Pinault in 2007 after he out-bid the Guggenheim Foundation, according to The New York Times. Renovations to transform the building into a stunning gallery space were led by Tadao Ando, a Japanese architect, and completed earlier this month.

Two buildings comprise the Punta della Dogana: the expansive Dogana and the Palazzo Grassi, a triangular-shaped space that opened in 2007 and is also owned by Pinault, according to artdaily.org. The Palazzo Grassi already houses work by prominent artists like Takashi Murakami, known for his successes in both fine arts and digital media. “Mapping the Studio,” the inaugural exhibition on display now, was planned with both sites in mind, and allows each space to dictate the presentation of the works.

“Mapping the Studio” features works from Pinault’s personal collection, as well as “Boy With Frog,” an 8-foot sculpture by American artist Charles Ray that was “commissioned for the building," reported The New York Times. Ray agonized a bit over how large to make the sculpture, which sits outside the Dogana along a popular walking route among Venetians, but he isn’t usually one to obsess over the way his work will be perceived, telling W magazine in 2007, “I’m worried about making a good sculpture. I’m not so worried about the interpretation of it.”

To see it for yourself, head to the museum’s official Web site for information on visiting the Punta Della Dogana and the Palazzo Grassi, both owned by the Francois Pinault Foundation. Tickets are 20 euros (for access to both sites) or 15 euros (to visit one). The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Tuesday. -- Sarah Amandolare

Kathy McCabe, DreamofItaly.comnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22237775.post-78845947964808553832009-06-01T18:17:00.005-04:002009-06-01T18:35:42.062-04:00What You Don't Know About ItalianThe Italian language is as fascinating as it is beautiful. When I read a preview copy of the new book, La Bella Lingua: My Love Affair With the World's Most Enchanting Language, I asked author Dianne Hales to share her captivating findings about the history and nuances of Italiano. She shares them in a special article in our May newsletter. But here a few excerpts from her book:

Italian's basic word chest, as tallied in a recent dictionary totals a measly 200,000, compared to English's 600,000 (not counting technical terms). But with a prefix here and a suffix there, Italian words multiple like fruit flies. Fischiare (whistle) sounds merry enough, but fischiettare means "whistling with joy." No one wants to be vecchio (old), but invecchiare (to become old) loses its sting - and according to an old Italian, no one does so al tavolo (at table). Sooner or later we may all may end up in a garbuglio, or muddle, but stumbling through the syllables of garbugliarsi is sure "to get (you) muddled." A sign outside a rustic osteria (a tavern serving simple food) summarized its entire menu on a single word: pranzo (lunch) - fifteen euro; pranzetto (lighter lunch)- ten euro; pranzettino (bite to eat) - five euro.

****

What Italian doesn't say also is revealing. Italian has no words that precisely translate lonely (unthinkable for its gregarious speakers), privacy (equally unthinkable in an Italian family), spelling (since words generally look as they sound - to Italians that is), or dating (although it begins before puberty). Yet some of the most tantalizing Italian words such as garbo, a pitch-perfect combination of style and grace, and agio, a sense of comfort and ease, don't translate into English.

Follow Dream of Italy on Twitter where this week we will give away five copies of La Bella Lingua!

Kathy McCabe, DreamofItaly.comnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22237775.post-36431007873533261522009-06-01T13:25:00.004-04:002009-06-01T13:36:23.734-04:00Wine Captain's Course Starts in Washington, DCSince 1989, the Wine Captain's Course has provided outstanding wine education for both professionals and amateurs. I interviewed Phil Dyer, Conscious Business Revolutionary and Strategic Business Coach about his Total Business Transformation Experience Italy Retreat and Coaching Support program and did I ever come away impressed. Phil has created an incredible program designed to help entrepreneurs and small business owners overcome their business and money blocks to create the business to support their ideal life and the best part is that it includes a week-long retreat at an amazing villa in Tuscany. So of course, I knew the premiere of the movie version of Dan Brown's book Angels & Demons would bring oodles of attention, mostly from travel writers, to Rome's role in the flick and how the average traveler could use the story as a lense through which to see the Eternal City. At this point, I haven't seen the film - I will tomorrow. But I've been surfing the Web for various takes on the travel aspects of this book-turned-movie phenom:

Of course, Dream of Italy offers our own Rome itinerary for taking in the highlights of the Angels & Demons novel. Susan Sanders, author of Secrets of Angels & Demons: The Unauthorized Guide to The Bestselling Novel, and executive director of Rome's Institute of Design & Culture (where she leads an Angels & Demons city course) wrote an insightful piece for us.

When the Vatican prevented movie producers from continuing to film in Rome, director Ron Howard moved the cast and crew to Reggia di Caserta (one of the world's most stunning palaces) south of Rome in Campania. I visited the palace a few years ago and here's my travel article on the Reggia di Caserta. Not many travel articles are picking up on this non-Rome angle.

Looking to really dig your teeth into the art and history behind Angels & Demons? (If you know of one, add it in the comments.) The Westin Excelsior (home to the largest hotel suite in Europe - I know because I wrote about it) has a movie travel package including an Angels & Demons theme menu at the hotel restaurant and a private or group tour.

If after reading the book, watching the movie, you are ready to plan a visit to the Vatican, see it with the absolutely best Vatican tour guide ever! Contest runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, May 17.

Knowledge is power. When visiting a world-class city like Rome, it’s easy to get swept up in the madness of trying to see its plethora of sights, so come to terms right now: it is not possible. Knowing you cannot possibly see everything—especially with children in tow—gives you the freedom to create a lovely and memorable vacation everyone will enjoy. Bravo!

More good news: after settling on your list of must-sees, a slew of fun activities still await you. To make this list of family favorites, the activities or sights must be uniquely Roman (location, view, etc.) and involve an activity or discovery of some kind that makes it fun to search for or arrive at—with or without kids!

1) Piazza Garibaldi at Noon: Get up to this piazza atop the Janiculum hill to watch soldiers shoot a cannon over Rome! Every day, a howitzer is wheeled out from its lair underneath the statue to mark the noon hour (mezzogiorno!). Stand behind the cannon to really feel its blast; younger kids should stand further away to protect tender eardrums. The view from this pretty terrace is spectacular because the Janiculum is higher than any of ancient Rome’s original Seven Hills. Tranquility abounds. No wonder Caesar had a villa here. Don’t forget to pay homage to Garibaldi either! He’s the hero of Italy’s unification and that’s his statue in the center of the piazza.

2) The Orange Garden on the Aventine Hill: For instant adventure, take the secret, walled and cobbled footpath called Roca di Savella, up to the orange garden (immediately on your right as you exit the path onto Via S. Sabina). As soon as you enter the path, you’re in another world, far from the modern city streets, and the garden is a great place to play, picnic, and enjoy a beautiful Roman vista from a serene, citrus-scented perch. You’ll find the path rising from Via Santa Maria in Cosmedin, a few steps from Circus Maximus and the Mouth of Truth, made famous by Audrey Hepburn. From the garden, continue down the street a few blocks more and you’ll discover the Knights of Malta Keyhole! A peek through reveals the cupola of St. Peter’s, perfectly framed by gardens. Keep in mind you’re looking at three independent states (Italy, the Order of Malta, and the Vatican)!

3) Botanical Gardens: Rome’s restorative Orto Botanico is surprisingly convenient, since its walking distance from the picturesque Ponte Sisto. Once home to Queen Cristina, the grounds now house a large collection of palm trees, scented gardens, and enchanted, rose-clad, pathways and fountains. For a Far East effect, serpentine past a magical stand of bamboo and climb all the way up to a mysterious Japanese pagoda with another great view!

4) Castel Sant’Angelo’s Park: Sure, the castle’s maze-like interior offers tons of fun—exploring its ramps and ramparts is straight out of Harry Potter—but those in the know head to its moat! Just take the stairs down from street level to enjoy a green break in what is now a lovely city park, complete with playground equipment and plenty of space to relax, share a picnic, or pick up a game of soccer. Castel Sant’Angelo has played many roles—as Hadrian’s mausoleum, a prison, a papal palace, a fort, and, now, your own relaxing sanctuary.

5) Tiberina Island: This charming, boat-shaped island in the middle of the Tiber river has just enough space to house a church, a few restaurants, and a hospital. Grab some fresh-squeezed juice (spremuta di arancia, for orange juice) or gelato and make for the “lower deck.” The terrace is practically at water’s edge, so you can plop down like Tom Sawyer Italian style, and soak up the sun from an unexpected place. The bridges leading to the island are two of Rome’s oldest—and the ruins of a third bridge, the Ponte Rotto, or broken bridge, are in the water downstream (south) of the island.

FOUR LUCKY READERS WILL WIN A COPY OF Rome with Kids! I'd like to start making this a weekly feature. A few quick links about what's on my Italy travel radar. A great way to get this information in real time is to follow me on Twitter! Here's what reading about, researching and writing about this week:

I always love to hear about celebrity weddings in Italy mostly because they get married in some of the most amazing venues; Salma Hayek's vows at La Fenice in Venice is one example. A few days ago actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard got married in one of my favorite regions - Puglia. They said their vows at an exclusive hideaway (that doesn't even have a Web site) owned by British expats. People.com has the details.

Movie fans are getting excited about next week's premiere of the film version of Dan Brown's bestseller Angels & Demons. (Anthony, the host, had a great list too, including Vasari's Lives of The Artists.) I'm not talking about guidebooks but rather (mostly) non-fiction picks that truly convey the atmosphere and culture of a particular time and place in Italy. You will notice that I have a significant interest in history, particularly the World War II era. I probably have dozens of favorite books on Italy so this is by no-means a comprehensive list. I will be adding to it as I can...So, in no particular order:

Blood Washes Blood by Frank Viviano

Christ Stopped at Eboli by Carlo Levi

A Venetian Affair by Andrea di Robilant

Naples '44 by Norman Lewis

War in Val d'Orcia by Iris Origo

A Thousand Days in Venice by Marlena di Blasi

The Italians by Luigi Barzini

The House of Scorta by Laurent Gaude

Seasons in Basilicata by David Yeadon

La Bella Figura by Beppe Severgnini

Please add your favorite Italy book recommendations to the comments section!

Kathy McCabe, DreamofItaly.comnoreply@blogger.com4
